| Light knockdown | Flattened splatter, subtle | Yes, good at hiding seams and patches | Medium. Angi: $1–$2 / sq ft |
| Orange peel | Fine bumpy texture, like the skin of an orange | Somewhat | Lower. Angi: $0.80–$1.50 / sq ft |

Why Smooth Costs More
A truly smooth ceiling usually needs two or three thin coats of joint compound over the whole surface, sanding between coats, and careful lighting checks. Each coat has to dry. In humid Oklahoma weather that can mean waiting overnight between coats. A knockdown texture can go on in one pass and hides minor imperfections, so it’s faster and cheaper.

Matching the Rest of the House
This is the main reason to do the whole house at once. If you’re only doing some rooms, think about transitions. A smooth ceiling in the living room next to a knockdown ceiling in the hall can look odd where they meet in an open floor plan. Many Broken Arrow homes have open living, dining and kitchen areas, so it’s often smart to do connected spaces together.
Repairs That Happen Along the Way
- Taping seams that were never finished well. Builders sometimes did minimal taping because the popcorn hid it.
- Nail and screw pops. These get reset and patched.
- Water-stained or sagging sections. Common after roof leaks or a bathroom overflow upstairs. Bad sections get cut out and replaced.
- Cracks at corners and seams. House movement over the years can crack ceiling joints. They’re re-taped, sometimes with mesh or paper tape.
Primer and Paint
New joint compound must be primed before painting, or the paint will look blotchy (called “flashing”). A flat ceiling paint hides imperfections best. If there are old water stains, a stain-blocking primer keeps them from bleeding through. Ask whether priming and painting are included in the quote or priced separately.
Questions to Ask Your Contractor
- How many coats of compound for a smooth finish?
- Can I see a ceiling you’ve finished in a similar room?
- Is priming and painting included? What paint?
- How do you handle dust during sanding?
- How long between coats, given the weather?
See the cost guide for how finish choice changes the price.
